You feel like a sack of flesh, uselessly plummeting into the soil, questioning the purpose of your entire life. As you fall to the ground, blood pouring everywhere, you feel more than bested in combat. Dying in this game-especially after you've just made an error leading to a gruesome death-is an intense experience, and almost feels life-like. When you get sucked into the combat, you almost feel like you're really there. All of this creates a high level of immersion. The atmosphere of the maps is well-polished and foreboding. The style of the game is spot-on for gritty high fantasy. But the core of this game-its combat-is highly refined and satisfying. The game could use some additonal modes for lasting appeal. You might not conquer the game, but you can still have fun doing so. But you can also disregard the technical aspects of combat and run in like a mad man. The depth seems subtle, but it's truly deep. Defeating your opponent means assessing their style and doing your best to counter it. You can hulk around wild swinging with a two-handed sword you can run circles around people slicing them up with a one-handed axe you can gracefully manipulate the distance between you and your opponent with a long reaching polearm and so on.
